This field recording was made at Jarrow Slake, a small stretch of reclaimed land situated on the River Don in North-Eastern England. This industrial site hosts a Nissan car storage facility, a thriving wildlife community and the occasional local fisherman. The river’s large mud banks are home to many underwater creatures which reveal themselves at low tide. Using 4 hydrophones (underwater microphones) this 4 channel piece captures some of the complex sounds which exist below the surface of the river. The recording is unprocessed and was made in one take with minimal top and tail editing.
This is a stereo version of a quadraphonic piece originally presented at Fri Art in Fribourg, Switzerland.
